BTC activates LTE network

Wireless monopoly holder Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has launched 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services on New Providence, Grand Bahamas, Abaco and Eleuthera, with other islands to be added to the network footprint in the coming months, The Bahamas Weekly reports. The LTE launch is part of plans to prepare BTC for the arrival of competition to the market after its monopoly on the mobile market expires this year. At the activation ceremony, the operator’s CEO Geoff Houston explained that the provider’s plans had been influenced by the US market, with a view to ensuring compatibility between its network and those in the US so American holidaymakers can roam on its network. To that end BTC has deployed its LTE network using the 700MHz band, used by several US operators for 4G services. Houston also claimed that BTC’s platform was the largest LTE network in the Caribbean region, adding that: ‘It’s absolutely the latest and greatest mobile communication network available. We are even ahead of most parts of Europe – where LTE has just barely been rolled out.’
